May 29, 2012

An Ohio Amish man whose stray rifle shot killed a 15-year-old girl in a buggy more than a mile away has been charged with reckless homicide, the Associated Press says.

The Holmes County prosecutor charged 28-year-old Marion Yoder, of Millersburg, with the third-degree felony for the death of Rachel Yoder of Fredericksburg, Ohio, as she was driving home from a Christmas party. The two are not related.

The charge follows recently completed ballistics evidence and an autopsy report. Authorities initially thought she had fallen out of the buggy and hit her head.

Marion Yoder told police he had fired the round into the air to clear his muzzle-loading rifle after a hunting trip. Rachel Yoder was struck in the head about 10 p.m. Dec. 15. Her horse continued home, where she fell out of the buggy and was found by her brother. She died the next day.
